Meet: Forestry England car park off Smitham Hill Explorer 141 (ST 5578 5412), what3words: visit.plump.valid
Focus: Bryophytes, ferns and fungi
Description: This conifer plantation, on the site of former lead-mining activity, has varied habitats, with broad rides, areas of heathland, a pond and wet woodland with Sphagnum-filled pools. There is a great diversity of plants, with a good array of ferns, and it is an excellent site for interesting bryophytes, including the rare Lead Moss (Ditrichum plumbicola). There are relics of the site’s industrial past, in particular the impressive Smitham Chimney, and fine views across the Chew Valley. The topography is reasonably flat with surfaced paths, although these can be muddy, so walking boots are advisable. Terrain off the paths is uneven and often wet. Bring packed lunch and waterproofs.
Please book with Helena in advance. Members can find contact details in their Autumn / Winter 2024-5 newsletter. This has several benefits for all meetings: the Leader is aware who is coming and can deal with any queries before the meeting (such as car-sharing, if required); in the unlikely event that arrangements need to change or the meeting has to be cancelled, attendees can all be contacted promptly and easily.
If you have booked but then are unable to attend, please contact the leader as soon as possible. The leader can then contact other members if there is a waiting list.
